Growing Guide

Zones: USDA 3–8
Light: Full sun — 6+ hours daily essential for best blooming
Water: Regular watering during establishment; drought-tolerant once established. Reduce watering during summer dormancy.
Soil: Well-draining soil is essential — Oriental poppies will rot in waterlogged conditions. Sandy or loamy soil preferred.
Planting: Plant bare roots in early spring with the crown 1–2 inches below soil surface. Space 18–24 inches apart.
Summer dormancy: Foliage dies back after the first bloom flush — this is normal. Plant summer annuals or ornamental grasses nearby to fill the gap.
Mature size: 24–36 inches tall in bloom
Division: Divide in late summer/early fall every 4–5 years to maintain vigor
Cut flower tip: Cut stems when buds are just beginning to open; sear cut ends with a flame immediately to prevent wilting
